Document your home's storm defenses.

Wind Mitigation Inspection
A wind mitigation inspection documents the features of a home that help it stand up to high winds. In Florida, many insurers offer discounts for certain features, so the report can matter. It is a record of what exists, not a repair list. Careful documentation matters here, because insurers rely on the form to review your home.
Caleb Charbonneau examines the roof covering, roof deck attachment, roof-to-wall connection, roof shape and opening protection. Those findings go on a standard form. Whether you receive a discount, and how much, is up to your insurer, so share the report with your agent. Keep a copy of the finished form with your other home records for future reference.

The right time to call.
Three situations where this inspection earns its keep.
When buying a home
New owners often order one so the policy reflects every wind-resistant feature the house already has from the start. Ask your agent whether the policy should be updated.
After a roof replacement
A new roof can change several of the features insurers look at. An updated report documents the change for your policy. Ask your agent whether the policy should be updated.
When premiums rise
If your premium has climbed, a current report may show features your insurer was not aware of. Discounts are never guaranteed.
Good to know.
Will I get a discount?
It depends on your insurer and on what the inspection documents. Many Florida insurers offer credits for certain features, but nothing is guaranteed. The report gives your agent the facts needed to ask for any credits that apply.
Does the report make my house stronger?
No. It records the features your home already has. It is not a repair plan. If the report shows a weak point, you may choose to upgrade it later, but that is a separate project.
How long is the report useful?
That depends on your insurer's requirements, and some ask for a new one after a roof replacement or major changes. Ask your agent how current a wind mitigation report must be for your policy. Keep a copy filed with your home records so it is easy to find.
